2027: I'd like to serve again as BARC VP

In the coming year I want to do what I think helps the club most:

  • Work alongside the other officers
  • Bring in good technical programs
  • Keep our meetings focused on the radio topics that brought us all here

Each of us practices ham radio

Many of us in different ways:

  • POTA
  • DMR
  • NTS
  • SSB
  • DX
  • FT8
  • SSTV
  • VHF
  • VARA
  • CW with fldigi
  • MeshCore
  • …and more

Let's keep doing that

  • Keep operating the way you enjoy
  • Team up — help each other learn and practice the radio we enjoy
  • Someone in this room already does the thing you want to try
  • Someone in this room wants to learn the thing you already do

Let's brainstorm!

What radio things do you enjoy?

Let's brainstorm!

What radio things do you want to try?

Ideas: "Never a Better Time to be a Ham"

Aaron KC0WIH's talk (slides) has plenty of starting points:

  • Radios are better and cheaper than ever
  • An SDR receiver for under $40 (RTL-SDR, OpenWebRX)
  • LoRa mesh: MeshCore and Meshtastic
  • 44Net: a public IPv4 address with your license
  • Linux for hams: Debian Hamradio blend, DragonOS
  • Open firmware: OpenRTX, OpenGD77
  • GitHub "awesome amateur radio" lists, Hackaday

Turning ideas into meetings

Possible program formats for 2027:

  • Technical presentations from members and guest speakers
  • Show and tell: bring the radio, the build, the log
  • Hands-on nights: program a radio, set up an SDR, try a digital mode
  • On-air outings: POTA activations, VHF/UHF nets, contests

What would get you to a meeting?

More members, more active

Goal: increase the number of members actively participating in the hobby and the club.

  • Pair up: someone who knows a mode + someone who wants to learn it
  • Short member talks: "here's what I did on the air this month"
  • Make it easy to ask for help — and easy to offer it
  • Invite the members we haven't seen in a while

Meeting structure IDEAs from chatting with Jim

  1. Five minutes of things like:
    1. Meshcore
    2. Makerspaces
    3. Scouting and service ideas

What's next

  • Tell me (or any officer) what you enjoy and what you want to try
  • Volunteer to show the club something you do
  • Suggest speakers and topics for 2027

Thanks and 73

Questions?

A fantastic source used heavily in these slides is:

Aaron KC0WIH's "Never a Better Time to be a Ham"

TODO: add callsign under name.

Capture answers on a whiteboard or shared doc. Note who does what so we can pair people up.

Match "want to try" answers against "already enjoy" answers from the last slide.
